This weekend we met friends for Sunday Lunch in a pub in Kingston. I feel compelled to tell you about it because Chris and I often dread going out for lunch with the children. Invariably one of them has a meltdown and one of us (probably Chris) ends up walking around outside with them. Not fun really. But this was different! I googled ‘family friendly pubs’ ‘toddler friendly sunday lunch’ etc and, whilst there weren’t many options forthcoming, The Canbury Arms kept coming up top of lists. It didn’t disappoint.
Despite a little mix up about our table booking we were seated quickly – the bar man on the way in even gave Joni a wave. A good sign, much better than the unimpressed look you can sometimes get as a parent taking a noisy toddler into a pub. The staff remained as attentive and lovely with the children throughout the whole time we were there. Even when we lost complete control of Wilbur left him to crawl around the floor the staff were lovely with him and weren’t put off by a little boy busily going up and down a small step!
I got the impression that their strategy is to sit families with children in their big conservatory and then other guests in the main bar area – I thought this was a fantastic idea. There is nothing worse than dealing with your daughter having a melt down because you haven’t passed her your glass of wine (what doesn’t she understand: IT IS MINE) under the watchful eye of disapproving diners.
The food was delicious. We all had a lovely roast, apart from Joni who chose Ham, Egg and Chips from the extensive children’s menu. Wilbur loved his child size roast dinner and we all loved the quiet whilst they happily tucked in to their dinner. We felt valued and relaxed despite having two whippersnappers with us. A big thank you to the friends we met up with too, who split the bill with us despite us costing a lot more than them!
So, if you are in the area and would like a relaxed, welcoming and friendly lunch with your children then The Canbury Arms is for you!
I was surprised at how few up to date reviews there were of really good restaurants/pubs to take younger children to so if you have any recommendations please send them our way!!
